All in the Family's Jean Stapleton Dead at 90
Jean Stapleton, best known for portraying Edith Bunker, wife of Archie Bunker, on the iconic television show All in the Family, passed away Friday at her New York City home at the age of 90.
Stapleton won three Emmys for playing the gentle, loving Edith, who would sometimes disagree with her blustering, bigoted "Awwwchie," but always remained loyal to him. The actress, who appeared in a slew of other stage and film productions, died of natural causes surrounded by her family, her son, director John Putch, said.
Among the movies and TV shows Stapleton appeared in: You've Got Mail, Scarecrow & Mrs. King, Michael, Touched by an Angel, Murphy Brown and Everybody Loves Raymond.
In a statement provided to ABC News, Putch and Stapleton's daughter, Pamela Putch, said, "Being the children of a beloved Mother on Television means sharing the spirit of who Jean Stapleton was with her friends and fans. It is with great love and heavy hearts that we say farewell to our collective Mother, with a capital M. Her devotion to her craft and her family taught us all great life lessons. Thank you for the outpouring of love and respect. We appreciate it deeply."
