Lou Reed Recovering from Life-Saving Liver Transplant

6/3/2013

Lou Reed is recovering from a liver transplant that he reportedly underwent in Cleveland a few weeks ago.  The influential rocker's wife, avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson, revealed the news of Reed's "big surgery" in a recent interview with The London Times.

The revelation explains why the 71-year-old Reed canceled a series of California concerts in April that included two scheduled appearances at the Coachella festival.

Anderson told The Times that her husband's condition was "as serious as it gets," adding, "He was dying.  You don't get [a liver transplant] for fun."

As for the prognosis for Lou's recuperation, Anderson said, "I don't think he'll ever totally recover from this, but he'll certainly be back to doing [things] in a few months."  She also noted that Reed, who's an avid martial arts enthusiast, was "already working and doing t'ai chi."

In addition, Anderson shared some details about the surgery, which called "a technological feat."  She explained, "You send out two planes -- one for the donor, one for the recipient -- at the same time. You bring the donor in live, you take him off life support...I was completely awestruck."

As reports of Reed's transplant began circulating, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer posted a message on his official Facebook page discussing his health and his hopes for the future.

"I am a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry," writes Lou.  "I am bigger and stronger than ever.  My Chen Taiji and health regimen has served me well all of these years, thanks to Master Ren Guang-yi.  I look forward to being on stage performing, and writing more songs to connect with your hearts and spirits and the universe well into the future."
