Peter Frampton is in the midst of working on a project that he says is "completely different" from anything he's done before. The guitar great is creating new music that will serve as part of the soundtrack to a special production for the Cincinnati Ballet that will take place at the city's Aronoff Center for the Arts in late April. The event, titled Frampton & Cincinnati Ballet Live, will feature the 62-year-old rocker and his group playing a mix of classic songs and new material on stage to the accompaniment of the dance troupe. Speaking recently with ABC News Radio, Frampton shared a variety of details about the project. He says the performance will be made up of three 20-minute segments, with the first and last parts featuring "chestnuts" from his career and the middle segment showcasing a new piece he's composing with his frequent collaborator Gordon Kennedy. Regarding the new music, he says, "This is my first experience with writing not for a CD or an album…and I'm really enjoying it. It's scary as hell, 'cause who knows how it's gonna come out, but I think it's good to push yourself and do something different. You know, not always stay in the box." While Frampton only needs to come up with 20 minutes of original material for the section, he plans on putting together about twice that much, "so that we can choose the best of." Currently, three performances have been scheduled, one on April 26 and two the following day, but he adds, "if they go well, we'll add another show." In addition, Frampton reports that plans are in the works to film the event for television, and he also intends to record a studio version of the new piece that "probably [will] come out on an EP…at some point." Later in the year, meanwhile, Frampton will be hitting the road for a new tour that will feature him performing with various guest guitarists, including blues legend B.B. King. Dates for the trek, dubbed Peter Frampton's Guitar Circus Tour, have yet to be revealed.
