Heart's Wilson Sisters Share Feelings About Impending Rock Hall Induction
Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson discuss their upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a new video interview posted on the Rock Hall's official YouTube page. In the clip, Nancy shares how she found out about the honor, while revealing that she got to inform her sister that their famous band would be entering the Rock Hall as part of its Class of 2013.
"I heard from [Rolling Stone editor-in-chief/Rock Hall co-founder] Jann Wenner himself on the phone, and I went straight into denial. Like, 'This cannot be true -- you're lying!'" explains the guitarist. "It was really incredible of him to call me personally and then we were, like, 'Who gets to tell Ann?!'…So I got to text Ann, and then she got it on the plane that night, so it was really great."
The news of Heart's induction caps a momentous year for the sibling rockers. Earlier in 2012, the Wilsons' group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and also released a new studio album and their first box set. In addition, Nancy got married, while she and her sister published a well-received memoir.
"After this year, how things have been going so well, so many wonderful occasions, this is just…the crowning one," says Nancy of the induction. "This, as a rock musician, [was] completely an achievement."
Ann, meanwhile, says she's extremely appreciative of the honor because she feels it validates the original work she and her band mates have created.
"It means so much because we have never tried to follow anybody else's 'paint by numbers,' you know?" the singer declares. "We started writing our own songs the way we wanted to write 'em. We didn't follow anybody else's lead, really. So the thing that we came up with, to have it lauded as being a pinnacle is really, really moving."
As original as Heart's music may be, Nancy maintains that the group does have many other artists to thank as inspirations.
"We're cross-pollinated with [Led] Zeppelin and The Beatles and Elton John and all those great influences," she remarks. "When you try to rip off all your favorite artists, you sort of end up with something original, I think. But it's all in there and it's all part of what made who we are."
Ann and Nancy recently had the opportunity to salute one of the groups who inspired Heart, Led Zeppelin. Earlier this month, the sisters took part in a moving rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" when the British rock giants were lauded at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors gala. Video of the performance can be viewed online now.
