Add Richard Marx's name to this year's already-crowded Christmas album field. He's releasing his first holiday album, Christmas Spirit, on October 22.
Richard decided to make the album because over the last five years, he and his three sons have recorded Christmas songs together which they use as "holiday greeting cards" for their family and friends. “I love Christmas, and we’ve always made a big deal of it in our family,” Richard says in a statement. “I love what it represents. It’s a special time of the year for us.”
Recorded live with a full symphony orchestra, the album includes new versions of holiday standards, as well as original material. One of them is the title song was co-written with Fee Waybill of The Tubes -- remember their huge '80s hit "She's a Beauty?" Another is "Christmas Mornings," which Richard co-wrote with famous film composer Dave Grusin. One highlight of the disc is a duet of "Let There Be Peace on Earth" with Richard's good pal Kenny Loggins.
The most special guests, though, are Richard's wife Cynthia, their three sons and Richard's mother, Ruth, who all sing together on "O Come All Ye Faithful." The three boys -- Brandon, Lucas and Jesse -- also join Richard on the a cappella "Alleluia."
Richard will kick off a tour November, performing the Christmas songs as well as his hits. A special edition of Christmas Spirit will be available at Target; it includes four extra tracks.
Other artists releasing Christmas albums this year include Cee Lo Green, Rod Stewart and Colbie Caillat.
